Attractions and activities
Kona, HI. If you're heading to the Big Island there's certainly one area you cannot miss... the Kona (West) Coast. This warm and sunny leeward area has become the resort area of the island. You'll find a vast array of ocean-side restaurants, grocery stores, shops, and activity huts promoting various water activities in the nearby Kailua Bay. Makalawena Beach makes you work a little bit to enjoy it.
This secluded white sand beach is a crescent broken up by rocky lumps of lava. Mahai'ula Bay is a lovely crescent of white sand and clear waters. Kiholo Bay is a little puddle of blue and green from this vantage point. The mixture of sea and fresh water gives it this interesting blend. The hike to see this lava-rimmed bay is long and hot, so this is a good way to cheat and see it without all the extra work. The lava around the bay dates to the 1859 Mauna Loa lava flow.
Also called Manini'owali Beach, this lovely little pocket of sand used to be very difficult to access, but since a multi-million dollar road has been paved right through the lava- it's a snap to enjoy this Big Island Gem. Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park is a 1,160 acre area on the Kona coast. Make sure to explore two ancient fish ponds, `Aimakapa and Kaloko, as well as Ai'opio fish trap at Ai`opio Beach. This hot, lava strewn landscape held great spiritual significance for the ancient Hawaiians who decided to settle here. There's so much to do and see, plan a long trip or several shorts ones.
